EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a very powerful tool for helping people change their relationship with painful memories.
Many of us get 'hooked' by trauma; the memory feels like it's happening right now, and we get caught in a struggle with all the difficult thoughts and feelings that show up with it.
EMDR seems to help the brain file that memory away properly, not as a present-day threat, but as something that simply happened in the past. It doesn't erase the memory, but it can effectively lower the volume on its emotional charge.
The memory is still there, but you're no longer fused with it. You can look at it, rather than from it. This creates space, allowing you to stop struggling with the past and get back to consciously choosing actions that move you toward the life you want to live right now."
